Ayurveda: Home Remedies
with Arun Deva
Saturday June 6th
1:30-5:30pm
$40 (earlybird) /$50

Stay Healthy!
Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga, deals with the integration of mind, body and spirit
as a pathway to health. In this workshop we will focus on its most vital path: that of prevention!

We will discuss
how the different doshas (constitutions or body types) and gunas (qualities of nature) move
in and out of balance, the use of Yoga as a therapeutic tool, dietary concepts,
herbal remedies and simple daily and seasonal living routines that help keep us balanced.
We will sample and learn how to use simple remedies from our kitchens to keep us calm,
vibrant and balanced. Arun will bring tea and herbs and give you the tools to discern your
constitution and the knowledge of proper foods and herbs for your individual needs.
Empower yourself to maintain health through herbs, food and lifestyle! No experience
necessary, just a desire to be healthy and a pen & paper!

Ayurveda, which literally means "the science of life", is an ancient holistic healthcare system
that regards health as a state of balance in which disease cannot exist. As a result of many
different factors, our state of balance is disrupted and treatment is required to restore it.
Treatises on all aspects of medicine, including surgery, were written as far back as 200 B.C.,
while the oral tradtion is estimated back to 1500 B.C but may be far older.

Arun Deva has a DASc. in Ayurvedic Sciences and serves on the Board of the California Asociation
of Ayurvedic Medicine (CAAM) He is also certified in Vinyasa Krama Yoga and Ayur*yoga

Bhandas & Mudras Pradipika
Saturday June 27th
with Emily Kosloski

1:30-4:30pm
$30 (earlybird) /$35

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a classical text describing Hatha Yoga.
It is said to be the oldest surviving text on Hatha Yoga.

While the text describes asanas (postures), purifying practices (shatkarma), mudras (finger and hand positions), bandhas (locks), and pranayama (breath exercises), it also explains that the purpose of Hatha Yoga is the awakening of kundalini (subtle energy), advancement to Raja Yoga, and the experience of deep meditative absorption known as samadhi.

Swami Swatmarama, a disciple of Swami Goraknath, wrote the text in the 15th century CE, drawing upon previous texts and his own experiences.

Twists are Fun!!!
Saturday July 11th
with Kim Henigman
1:30-4:30pm
$30 (earlybird) /$35

Join Kim and explore the basic foundations for cultivating a great twist -- whether it be standing, seated, and even inverted. Twists stimulate circulation and have a cleansing and refreshing effect on the body. Revolving the trunk wrings out tension and stiffness while creating ease and expansion. Spiraling the torso brings a sense of flexibility to the spine.

Some of the Benefits of Twists

Twisting Poses will help restore your spine's natural range of motion, cleanse your organs, and stimulate circulation. Yoga twists involve the spine, as well as several major joints, including the hips and shoulders. In fact, full range of motion in spinal rotation is essential to many yoga poses.
Unfortunately, many people lose full spinal rotation in the course of living a sedentary lifestyle. Some losses can occur if joints fuse due to trauma, surgery, or arthritis, but most range of motion loss comes from the shortening of soft tissues. If you don't lengthen the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (connective tissues) to their full length at least a few times a week, they will gradually shorten and limit the nearby joint's mobility.
In the case of twisting, the limitation is usually in soft tissues around the spine, abdomen, rib cage, and hips. If you regularly practice yoga twists, there are some clear benefits to these same joints and soft tissues. Not only do you maintain the normal length and resilience of the soft tissues, but you also help to maintain the health of the discs and facet joints (the small pair of joints on the back of the spine where each two vertebrae overlap).
